she took the last drag of her cigarette as the candle light died down. her room was dark and feigned peace, but she could still hear the mechanical noises behind her heavy eyelids. laying down was hard— she could still feel the bruises, and the scars weren’t healed, and visions of explosions and the guilt of thousands of people killed lit up her mind like a fuse.

it was with the bitter taste of tobacco in her mouth that she realised that she was completely alone— it terrified her, gnawed on her bones like a ravenous animal.
